Synthetic Leather
Synthetic leather is also called eco-leather. Its texture is like the obtained from an animal, but it is obtained by applying non-traditional procedures and, as in the case of natural or legitimate leather, it has been ancestrally worked by different cultures throughout the world.
This type of leather is obtained by starting with a mixture of a plasticizing material, introduced into a mixing machine and applying chemical substances and procedures onto it. To this initial mixture an ultraviolet light stabilizer is added, which is intended to make it resistant to the sun. Afterwards, a retardant substance is applied that makes it also resistant to extreme heat and fire. A specialized team is responsible for joining these solutions, simultaneously adding a mix of vinyl powder, until obtaining a consistent fusion.
At the same time, but in other specialized mixing equipment, different dyes are added that will serve to dye this mixture in all the desired colors. Finally, the result of both procedures is joined, turning it into a large roll, which must be covered by a paper that has an appearance and texture similar as leather, using a machine.
The union of the paper with the vinyl is then stored in an oven at high temperatures that will harden its texture. Finally, this paper will become a piece that will have a consistency and texture similar to fabric, by applying a thickening process.
With the obtained material, which is no longer anything other than synthetic leather or leatherette, it is now possible to make different types of pieces with the design that the manufacturer wants, such as shoes, bags or wallets. Its resistance is very high and its appearance, at first glance, is similar to traditional or legitimate leather.
It is ecological, not because the implementation of industrial processes or unnecessary chemical substances, rather because it is not obtained from animal leather that the animal must be slaughtered for it, which like this we have a preservation of the species and animal life. As we have seen, obtaining the so-called ecological or synthetic leather does require the implementation of processes and substances traditionally used in the textile industry, which, as has already been studied by experts, does generate damage to the environment.
Pachamama cares about all the processes that its artisans follow in order to impact the environment in the least possible way.
